Karków, Poland
Karków, Poland is where Yanek and his family lived before the war started. The town was first established in 1364 making it one of the oldest in the entire country. It is located in the southern part of Poland. Until 1939 Karków was inhabited by both Jewish and Catholic people. Once the the Nazi's overrun the city they turned it into a Jewish ghetto area. Trezebinia Concentration Camp
Trezebinia Camp opened in 1944 in Trerezinia, Poland. Most of the people who were brought to this camp were young boys who were still strong enough to do hard labor. The Nazis at Trezebinia were some of the cruelest who liked to put foolish tasks on the prisoners. The camp was later evacuated in 1945 where they shipped everyone off to another camp. Auschwitz Concentration Camp
Auschwitz was one of the largest and deadliest camps through out the whole entire holocaust. It was first established in 1940 when the Nazis first took over Poland. It was one of the oldest camps inside of Poland. Auschwitz held over 1.3 million prisoners and about 1.1 million died there. The camp finally closed at the end of the war in 1945. Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp
Bergen-Belsen was opened in 1940 and like the rest closed in 1945. Bergen-Belsen is located in Lohheide, Germany. This spot has become a memorial site for all the victims and is mostly infamous for being the site where Anne Frank died in 1945 just a mere month before the war ended. Dachau Concentration Camp
Dachau Concentration Camp was the first camp to be built in Germany. The camp was first opened in March of 1933 and first held 200 prisoners. Dachau also hosted many priests and clergies having a total of 2,720 priests by the time it closed. The camp ran until 1945 when the American Army invaded it and killed most of the Nazis. It was later recorded that 31,951 people were killed at Dachau Concentration Camp. |
Plaszów Concentration Camp
Plaszów Concentration Camp was built in 1942 as a forced labor work camp. This camp was only open for three years and closed in 1445. The camp is located in Karków, Poland. This camp is said to have held over 150,000 people during it's time. This camp is most infamous for it's camp leader Amon Goeth who was a notorious killer. Birkenau Concentration Camp
Birkenau or Auschwitz II-Birkenau Concentration Camp is the second Auschwitz camp to be opened. It first opened in 1941 to make more space since the first camp was so crowded. This camp was mainly for extermination and forced labor. This camp was also home to many gypsies who were also victims in the holocaust. Birkenau was one of the most violent camps during the holocaust. The camp was closed at the end of the war in 1945. Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp
Sachsenhausen is located in Oranienburg, Germany. The camp was set up in 1938 for political prisoners. This camp also ran until the end of the holocaust. When the camp had been saved at the end of the war only 3,000 people were left and most of them died anyway from diseases and wounds they received at the camp. Gross-Rosen Concentration Camp
One of the largest concentration camps accounting for 11% of all the victims Gross-Rosen was located in Poland. Although it was located in Poland it had 100 sub camps that were located in Germany and Czechoslovakia. The camp first opened in the summer of 1940. Many of the prisoners that were at Gross-Rosen ended up working the granite quarry. This camp closed on April 14, 1945 also known today as Valentines day. Munich, Germany
After Yanek was saved from Dachau Concentration Camp him and many others where taken to Munich, Germany. Located in the south eastern section of Germany it is fairly close to Dachau. Once the war ended many people who survived the holocaust moved here for temporary shelter that the Americans and other allies where providing for them. Here people where able to restart their lives and had more opportunities and choices. |
